I know that most of my posts have something to do with my hobbies. But you can also see in them that my spiritual life underlies all of them, in fact is the lynch pin for everything and every relationship. That wasn’t always the case, read Ever Ask “Why Do I Blog?” The journey Part 1 (then parts 2 & 3).
Recently I have been more and more convinced that God should come first in my day too. God Before … Anything else.
That sounds really easy when I am sitting at my computer working on a post. And my intentions are so good!
- But then DH goes out to get the newspaper … Uh Oh.
- And my e-mail dings with one of my VIP friends … Uh Oh.
- And while I’m on e-mail I see who had repinned my pins on Pinterest and check out their boards …Uh Oh.
- And see what cool new embroidery designs are on sale …Uh Oh.
- And then I run into the bedroom for a minute to get something and pass by my hobby room …Uh Oh.
- And DH points out new baby ducks outside (read From Quackers and Cheese) …Uh Oh.
Well, you get the picture. I bet many of you are saying, “ooooh, that sounds like me.” So much for my good intentions.
A friend of mine gave me a book which started things going. JESUS CALLING -Enjoying Peace in His Presence by Sarah Young. Devotions for every day written using scripture just like Jesus was talking directly to me. It’s wonderful. Click on the book to go to Amazon where you can look inside.
But it is a book. And easy to put down some where, and still get distracted. I tried my best to read every day, and it’s wonderful, because it trains me to keep my eyes on Him and not on circumstances. (I also downloaded it on Kindle and an iPhone app (paid one is MUCH better).
Another friend told me about devotions online. Sounded good, but I didn’t have the discipline to remember to go to the site every day, even if it was bookmarked. But then I discovered …
As you could see, e-mail was a big distraction. THEN I realized that several of the devotions sites had e-mail devotions, coming directly to ME
. And I didn’t think God would mind. So I signed up for two of them. http://www.heartlight.org
. I love it! Now the medium which had been a distraction became the prime thing which brought me closer to God FIRST.
Here is yesterday’s from www.Heartlight.org I specifically like the prayer that it gives each day because so often I don’t really know how to pray.
VERSE: But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
THOUGHT: Life is ours! Death no longer holds us captive! Victory has been given to us! Jesus is Lord. What else needs to be said? “Praise God!”
PRAYER: Thank you, Father, for sending Jesus. Thank you, Almighty God, for raising him from the dead. Thank you for the assurance that his life is alive in me as I serve in you. In Jesus’ name I praise you . Amen.

And to be sure I was really in the Bible
every day, I signed up one of the e-mail Bible reading plans through the year from http://www.www.biblegateway.com
. It comes in every morning. I find myself spending a lot more quality time with God than I ever did before. And my day goes a whole lot better.
What I found was that if God was first in my day, the distractions faded away. He might not use e-mail with you, but in case that is your distraction, I pray you find hope in these words to put God Above Everything Else … First in YOUR day.
